We started with a round of drinks — a bottle of Pacifico Clara lager ($5) and a glass of sweet, fruity sangria ($7) — and tortilla chips with fresh pico de gallo ($3.50). The salsa tasted as if it had just been chopped in the kitchen. It was so fresh, in fact, it could have sat a little bit more to cure and meld.
This didn't stop us from devouring the bowl of tomatoes, onions, peppers and cilantro. Unfortunately, our waitress got overwhelmed and we couldn't muster a second order or second round of drinks. Coctel de camarones ($15) is a warm tomato-seafood soup loaded with tomato, jalapeño, cucumber, avocado, cilantro and pieces of shrimp. It burst with fresh tomato and cucumber flavors, almost like a warm pico de gallo, with hints of seafood in the broth. The cucumber and shrimp maintained their texture and snap as they swam in the tangy, flavorful broth. There's mole on his Oaxacan chicken as well.
But for some real fun, check out the "caramel sticky" pork spare ribs, with a Moroccan harissa sauce; a culinary carom shot that's all over the map — and all over your fingers as well.
